Ledger Live FAQ

Your questions, answered. Find everything you need to know about setting up, securing, and using Ledger Live to its full potential.

General Questions

What exactly is Ledger Live?

Ledger Live is the companion application for your Ledger hardware wallet (like the Nano S Plus or Nano X). It's a single, secure interface for your computer and smartphone that allows you to manage your cryptocurrencies, view your portfolio in real-time, install apps on your device, and access a world of Web3 services like staking and NFT galleries.

Is Ledger Live free to use?

Yes, the Ledger Live software is completely free to download and use on all supported platforms (Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, and iOS). The only cost is the one-time purchase of the physical Ledger hardware wallet. There are no subscription fees for using the standard features of the app.

Can I use Ledger Live without a hardware wallet?

No. The security of the entire system relies on the hardware wallet. Ledger Live is the interface, but the Ledger device is what signs transactions and keeps your private keys safe and offline. You can open the app and explore the 'Discover' section, but you cannot manage any assets without connecting and unlocking a physical Ledger device.

Security

Are my private keys stored in Ledger Live?

Absolutely not. This is the core security principle of Ledger. Your private keys never leave the secure element chip inside your physical Ledger device. Ledger Live is a non-custodial application that only reads your public blockchain data and constructs transactions, which you must then physically verify and sign on your hardware wallet.

What happens if I lose my Ledger device?

Your crypto is safe. As long as you have your secret 24-word recovery phrase, you can purchase a new Ledger device (or any other compatible hardware wallet) and restore full access to all your funds. This is why protecting your recovery phrase is the most critical step in securing your assets. Never store it digitally and never share it with anyone.

Can Ledger or Cypher Key access my crypto?

No. Ledger is a non-custodial solution. This means you, and only you, have control over your private keys and your crypto. The company has no way to access your funds, view your private keys, freeze your accounts, or reverse your transactions. You are in complete control.

Features & Usage

How many assets does Ledger Live support?

Ledger Live supports over 5,500 coins and tokens. You can manage major cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin (BTC) and Ethereum (ETH), along with thousands of other tokens across multiple blockchains, including ERC-20, TRC-20, BEP-20, and more. Support for new assets is added continuously.

Can I manage NFTs in Ledger Live?

Yes. Ledger Live has a dedicated gallery section where you can securely view and manage your NFTs on the Ethereum, Polygon, and Tezos blockchains. The app provides a beautiful interface to admire your collection, knowing the keys to your assets are safely stored on your device.

How does staking work in Ledger Live?

Ledger Live integrates with trusted third-party staking providers (like Lido for Ethereum). You can delegate your assets to a validator directly from the secure environment of the app. This allows you to earn passive income on your crypto without ever exposing your private keys to a potentially risky smart contract or browser extension.

Troubleshooting

Why is my balance not showing correctly?

This is usually a temporary synchronization issue. First, try clearing the cache in Ledger Live's settings (Settings > Help > Clear cache). If that doesn't work, ensure your Ledger Live app and device firmware are fully updated. Balances are pulled from public blockchain explorers, and occasional sync delays can occur.

How do I update Ledger Live and my device firmware?

Ledger Live will typically notify you with a banner at the top of the app when an update is available. For security, always update. To update your device firmware, connect it to your computer, unlock it, and go to the 'My Ledger' tab in the Ledger Live desktop app. An update prompt will appear if new firmware is available. Follow the on-screen instructions carefully.
